Family dynamics can get pretty complicated, and Ashley Darby can attest to that. The real housewives of the Potomac cast member has been open about the hard times she is going through in her family, whether it was in her marriage to Michael Darby or her relationship with her mother. In a recent Instagram post, the former beauty queen shared an update on one of her close family relationships. As usual, Ashley was sincere and forthright with what she shared.

In the July 2 Instagram post, Ashley had a few choice words for her mom, Sheila Matthews — and they were all overflowing with love and admiration. Here’s what Ashley had to say: “July 1st was a day this earth was blessed with a real angel!” she wrote. The angel in question? That would be Sheila!
Ashely’s post continued, “We’ve had a great time celebrating my mom and hopefully showing her a little of the love she’s showing everyone! A huge thank you to our wonderful family and framily [friends who are family] who went all the way with us! We love you so much! And happy birthday, my beautiful queen!!”
If you think the caption is sweet, wait until you see the video of Sheila’s birthday party. The tented reception, which seemed to take place in Ashley’s new backyard, had all the makings of a top-notch party. There were delicious snacks, fruity drinks and bright decor. The icing on the cake? Trays of gold cupcakes and tons of festive dance. Who knew Sheila had those moves?
The heartwarming post comes after some tough times for Ashley and her mum, who RHOP viewers witnessed.
Ashley’s “heartbreaking” past
In 2018, Ashley’s relationship with Sheila was not as solid as it is now. Ashley told at the time The daily dish that watching the interactions with her mother on RHOP was extremely heavy.
“When I look at the interactions my mom and I had during that time, it still breaks my heart,” Ashley said at the time. “One of the hardest episodes actually aired on Mother’s Day. So it was at a time when she was still in the process of finding a place to live, and I gave her some tough love, which was as exhausting for me as it was for her. And to be brought back to that place is very emotional for me.
However, on Mother’s Day that same year, Ashley shared a hopeful tribute to Sheila. “This is the stabilizing core of my being – the beautiful family I get to love,” she captioned a sweet photo of herself with her mother.
Despite any difficulties, she added: “Nothing will ever damage, replace or disrupt the bond we share. My mother selflessly raised us to be kind and joyful people, positive influences in the world. If you’ve had the privilege of being in Mom’s presence, you’ve experienced her unparalleled ability to make everyone laugh. Our relationship is evolving and the process is full of tears, but the butterfly will emerge soon. I cherish you endlessly.”
